Finding Your Way in a Startup

The opportunity to make an impact. It’s all you can ask for, really, when starting a career. At GetintheLoop, I’m incredibly fortunate to have that opportunity.

My journey with GetintheLoop started in the summer of 2016, but let’s go back to late 2015. I was graduating university without a clear path forward. Stressful, to say the least. We’re supposed to have everything mapped out after spending five years in university, right? Not the case for me as a business student specializing in marketing and entrepreneurship. Do I start a business myself? Do I work in creative marketing? Is communications or sales more of a fit? I had completed a year of co-op work during school, so I knew marketing or entrepreneurship or sales or communications or public relations was the realm for me, but that’s four too many “or’s” for the clarity I wanted and needed.

Don’t get me wrong – I highly encourage anyone with the opportunity to work co-op during school to take it. Through this varied experience, the path towards impact opportunity on a daily basis, with no two days the same, became more and more of a priority for me. I was working in these organizations, taking entrepreneurship in school, and pondering the direction I wanted to take with my career.

Late 2015 I had officially finished classes and took off for Australia and Southeast Asia. My worldview was impacted, meeting and talking with backpackers from all over the world, and I started to gain some of that career clarity. How could I really, truly, make an impact (or at least try to)? Priorities started to solidify in my mind, as I returned to Canada and looked for my first job post-university. I settled on engagement over complacency, potential over security, equity over a higher salary. I wanted to work for a startup.

Enter GetintheLoop. I had heard of this unique local marketing company, but didn’t know too much more before looking into a position called “Partner Success Manager.” The company seemed high-energy and ambitious, with great potential. I applied and the rest, they say, is history.

My first role with GetintheLoop, working in the Kelowna office, was managing the success of our business partners. It included a mix of marketing consulting, communications and sales – at a startup. It ticked all of the boxes I was looking for, and as a result was incredibly valuable and meaningful work. Day-to-day included speaking with GetintheLoop businesses, researching their industry and key success factors, determining how incentive-based marketing fit into their operations and how to see success with such a strategy. Daily learning was inevitable – more than I could ever ask for in my first post-university position. When I suggested a specific set of promotions to achieve a business goal, executed with the partner, and heard how it was positively affecting their business, I truly felt I was making an impact.

These day-to-day activities were eventually complemented with the opportunity to create. Working within a startup environment, the ability to add value and take initiative is ingrained into our culture. As I got a handle on my role, becoming extremely comfortable working in a high-energy, high-achieving environment, the opportunity to create presented itself more and more often. I loved it. When something really worked talking to a partner, or an email sequence led to higher engagement, I can always think – how do we scale this? How can I share this new process with my co-workers to improve as a company? After my co-op experience, I really valued this ability to create, add value to the company daily, and see the results first-hand.

Over time, the Partner Success department continue to grow and change. Training and leading others became part of my responsibilities. Again, I loved it. The same journey I went through as a newly minted Partner Success Manager, seeing the impact our product can make for businesses, I was now seeing for other people. Success for one was success for the team. I could see this, affect this, and help grow a strong culture.

Keeping with the theme of opportunity and growth, fast forward to the summer of 2017. I had been with GetintheLoop for a year to that point, the best year I could ask for: learning, creating, and executing our company’s strategy with business partners. One day, I heard we were looking for a business development manager in Victoria. This role was a progression of the work I had already been doing. Working with existing business partners flowed to gaining new partners. Many of our sales team had worked in Partner Success in the past: hearing what worked for businesses and proper methods of communication and time management, to name a few key factors. These skills I had developed over the past year led directly to explaining GetintheLoop to prospective partners and responding to their feedback.

I thought back to my university mentor. She would always talk about taking advantage of opportunities, when presented with something worth going after. You never know what will happen unless you go for it. Moving to Vancouver Island? Exciting – I had lived there in the past. Moving to a business development role? Exciting – I had built the skills needed to be successful. Without any big doubts, I told myself to go for it.

Fast forward again to April 2018. I’ve been working in Victoria for eight months and – this is a theme – absolutely love it. The strength of our team, our processes, and embracing the challenge has led to an incredible sense of fulfillment and promise. Promise of today, tomorrow, and what’s to come. It’s incredible to truly believe in your company and see the value you create. I feel extremely fortunate for my GetintheLoop experience to date, but it all goes back to my university mentor. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky. I believed in GetintheLoop, not only for how my career could progress, but for the opportunity to make an impact.

GetintheLoop Hires Nicholas Fane to Lead Customer Growth

GetintheLoop, Canada’s leading offers platform, is proud to announce that Nicholas Fane has joined, as Director of Sales & Partner Success. In this role, Nick will be responsible for revenue growth, and customer success, building on GetintheLoop’s recent expansion to more than 30 cities.

Nick has over a decade of experience in digital media sales, account management, and strategy consulting. Most recently he led the enterprise go-to-market strategy and account teams for Mediative, an award winning national digital agency. Previously, he was part of a B2B marketing start-up, Enquiro, that was successfully acquired by YP in 2010.

“As we continue expanding our business across Canada, we’re excited to add leadership that will help the company grow to the next level. Nick’s enthusiasm and demonstrated success will help us serve our expanding customer base and drive company growth,” stated Chris Pinkerton, President & COO of GetintheLoop.

February: Updates to Partner Statistics.

In response to your feedback, we are introducing updates to make it easier for you to measure your success with GetintheLoop. These updates were recently tested with select partners, with positive feedback, and are now available for all partners.

Update – “Conversions” are now “Actions”.

GetintheLoop drives members to take a variety of actions related to your business, including redeeming your offers, visiting your website, calling your business, or visiting in person. To reflect these actions accurately, “Conversions” are now called “Actions”. This update makes it easier to understand how many members interact with your business.

Partners have requested an easier way to understand how their business is performing with GetintheLoop.  February: Updates to Redeem Button Options.

In response your feedback, we are introducing updates to make it easier for members to use offers from your business. These updates were recently tested with select partners, with positive feedback, and are now available for all partners.

Update – More options for members to redeem offers.

GetintheLoop and our partners are always looking for ways to make it easier for members to use your offers. To achieve this, we added new options such as “Use Now”, “Call to Order”, and “Book Online” to allow members to redeem offers in person, by phone, or online. This update makes it easier for members to interact with your business.

February: Release of Facebook Push Posts

This release added the ability for GetintheLoop partners to push offers directly from the GetintheLoop dashboard to their business Facebook page. No need to post separately on Facebook, one click does the trick!

 

When you hit the “Post to Facebook Page’ button, Facebook will ask for permissions to do so.  If you manage multiple pages and give permissions for more than one page, you will be presented with a drop-down page selector. Choose the page that you wish the post to be sent to, add your own message (optional) and post. Voila! You have now quickly and easily sent your offer to be posted on your business Facebook page!


February: Major update for Android

In this major update of GetintheLoop for Android, a brand new map and simple tabbed navigation was included giving Android users the ability to quickly sort through hundreds of offers to find the right one!

The map view is one of the most popular ways to discover businesses on GetintheLoop. The brand new “Near Me” map shows all the venues with live offers nearby, and each Loop is now available quickly and easily via the new top tab navigation. All the offers for a business are available by simply swiping left or right on an offer in the views including the all-new home view. Offers exclusive to GetintheLoop are shown first, followed by other available offers. A quick swipe up or down will scroll through the businesses around with offers available nearby.

We also added a new screen that shows all the offers available at a particular business. In addition to all their current offers, it also tells you a little about them, and includes their address, website, and contact details. Read the full update details here

Get ready to cheer! The Victoria Royals have joined GetintheLoop!

Ah hockey…Canada’s favourite winter sport! Hockey is a staple in many Canadian households, and we are excited to announce that the Victoria Royals and GetintheLoop have teamed up. The Victoria Royals are in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and play their home games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in downtown Victoria.

The Royals have been entertaining fans since their arrival for the 2011-12 season. The team has been a perennial playoff performer playing a fast and exciting style. The team won the Scotty Munro Trophy as they finished atop the regular season standings during the 2015-16 season. The team has had 10 players drafted by NHL teams, and this year saw their first ever player, Joe Hicketts, play in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings.

This year the Royals have been playing great hockey and were ranked as the top team in the CHL in the fall. The team is in the home stretch as they prepare for a long playoff run, which they are hoping ends by hoisting the Ed Chynoweth Cup as league champions! The games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre are a great family night out with loads of entertainment value on-and-off the ice.

We are very excited to announce major updates to the design and experience of GetintheLoop including more offers than ever before! This update is live now on Android and the GetintheLoop website.

We regularly receive great ideas and feedback from our incredible community of members and businesses. Members of GetintheLoop are always looking to find more great offers near them that appeal to their interests. GetintheLoop businesses often request the ability to promote an existing promotion alongside their exclusive offers on GetintheLoop and want to publish more offers. That feedback has been incorporated into GetintheLoop 3.0, with more offers than ever before and a brand new design.

Now With More Offers Than Ever
We are including more content than ever in GetintheLoop based on our member’s desire to see more offers near them. This means more offers in more places from more businesses than ever before. Businesses can now list 66% more offers than before and can also list their top promotions on GetintheLoop. We continue to work with our partners to provide exclusive and compelling offers that members love.

At GetintheLoop we’ve been using card style design in our apps since the beginning, and we’ve made major updates to our look and feel to modernize and streamline the member experience. We’ve made these changes to make it easier to find a place you want and see all of their offers.

We’ve updated the view you’ll see when opening the app, making it easier to see all the offers from each business.

All the offers for a business are available by simply swiping left or right on an offer in the views including the all-new home view. Offers exclusive to GetintheLoop are shown first, followed by other available offers. A quick swipe up or down will scroll through the businesses around with offers available nearby.

The offer view now includes improved images, a quick way to see every location where an offer is valid, and one-touch directions so you can easily find your way to a business.

The map view is one of the most popular ways to discover businesses on GetintheLoop wherever we travel across Western Canada. The map view now includes customized icons to show which category an offer belongs to. Finding great offers in categories like Food + Drink, or Home + Auto, is easier than ever before from the enhanced map view.
