Canada Day Events

Posted by Alberta, blog, British Columbia, Okanagan, Things To Do, Vancouver Island No Comment yet

If you want to celebrate Canada Day in Kelowna, you’ll definitely want to head downtown! Starting at 10:00 you can listen to music at the Folkfest Stage at Prospera Place, and the activities continue on from there.

Head into Waterfront Park to taste the food from a variety of different vendors while you listen to music at one of the many stages set up in the area. Make sure you stroll along the waterfront to Stuart Park and Kerry Park, where there are more events taking place, including areas just for kids!

Plan ahead to find a good spot to watch the 10:30 pm fireworks, which are launched from the middle of the lake. They’re best seen if you’re along the water front!

Admission to the festival site is free, but donations are greatly appreciated to help support the cost of the celebrations. For a schedule of all of the events taking place, click HERE

Home to Canada’s largest celebration outside of Ottawa, Canada Place is the must-attend Canada Day event in Western Canada. With food trucks, a main stage performance by Jojo Mason, and a citizenship ceremony welcoming 60 new Canadians, you won’t want to miss out on the family fun!
The much anticipated fireworks show starts at 10:30 pm, but make sure you plan your viewing spot! The best locations are Canada Place, Harbour Green Park, Coal Harbour, Stanley Park, Crab Park, and West Vancouver Seawall.
To learn more about the events at Canada Place, click HERE.

Be a part of the largest living flag in the country! They broke a record last year and are hoping to do so again this year. The main stage, which is situated on the Legislature Lawns, will have live music all afternoon from a variety of local acts. Make sure you stick around for the fireworks display in the harbour at 10:20pm.

For more information and to view a full schedule of the days events, click HERE.

With events happening all over the city for Canada Day causing road closures, you’ll want to pick your destination ahead of time so you can plan your route.

Start your day with a pancake breakfast at the Alberta Legislature Building. Either stay at the Legislature Building for more Canada Day fun in the afternoon, or visit Mill Woods, The Works Art & Design Festival, Chinatown The Art Gallery, or The Zoo for all of their different activities on Canada’s birthday.

Edmonton’s fireworks show takes place at 11 pm over Edmonton’s River Valley. Click HERE to learn more about the Edmonton’s Canada Day events and stay up to date with the road closures and alternate routes.

Winery Spotlight: Intersection Estate

Posted by Press No Comment yet

If you haven’t crossed paths with Intersection Estate Winery yet, you need to map out a new route. Located on the edge of the ‘Golden Mile’ in Oliver BC, Intersection prides themselves on allowing their vineyard to dictate what varietals of wine they produce, which has resulted in a portfolio consisting of 9 high-quality and authentic and wine varietals.

Established in 2009, Intersection has cemented itself as the winery ‘where good friends and good wines meet’. With one quick Google search and a read of some of their most recent reviews, it’s easy to see that on top of their delicious wines, they provide an excellent experience:

“We had such an amazing educational time there with Moss that we went back again the next day to try the Merlot flight. As noted, the whole thing was very educational, and we particularly enjoyed seeing (tasting!) the difference that soils and years make in the different Merlots. Warning – you’ll find it difficult to leave without buying wine and joining the wine club!”

“Staff are wonderfully friendly and extremely knowledgeable and make a tasting not only a fun-filled event but also a fascinating exploration of their beautifully crafted wines.”

In addition to creating wines that are driven by the unique soil of the region, Intersection is passionate about creating awareness and appreciation of BC wines through education. Vinstitute Wine School  is located within Intersection and offers weekly, stand-alone classes. The only public, wine institute in Okanagan, Vinstitute aims to give their students the ability to appreciate wine with confidence. The classes, which are taught by Moss Scheurkogel, who is also the manager of Intersection, are available until the end of October. Get $5.00 of the cost of the class exclusively through GetintheLoop here.

Visit Intersection Estate Winery at 450 Road 8, off the corner of Highway 97. Their tasting room is open everyday 10:00-5:30, and Vinstitute classes are offered on Saturday and Sundays.

Penticton: A Place People Live Year-Round

Posted by Press No Comment yet

Whether you’re a snow lover, a sun worshipper, or anything in between, Penticton has something for you! With its ideal climate and stunning backdrop, the South-central Okanagan town is a great place to visit year round. Derived from the Interior Salish work snpintktn, that’s just what Penticton means: “a place people live year-round.”

From festivals and great restaurants to outdoor activities, Penticton has something for everyone, no matter what time of the year it is. Here are a few of our favourite year round Penticton activities!

With the onset of Spring comes the opening of Penticton’s famous Farmer’s Market. Every Saturday from May until October, head down to the 100 block of Main St in the heart of downtown Penticton, where you can find offerings from local farmers, artists, bakers, crafters and prepared food vendors.

Quench your thirst with a wine tour after you’ve finished at the market! Head up to Naramata Bench, or drive to Canada’s wine country and tour through Oliver and Osoyoos! Make sure you check out our wine loop for exclusive offers and experiences before you go!

Start your day with Epic Cycling Wine Adventure Tours! Epic Cycling offers guided rides for avid road cyclists who wish to explore Penticton’s beautiful wineries. Along with the ride of a lifetime, come and get a taste of Europe with a world-renowned wine region waiting for you to discover.

To cool off after your ride, cool off and lounge down the Penticton River Channel!  Grab a floatie (or you can rent one there for $10) and make your way to the north end of Penticton at 215 Riverside Drive for a relaxing afternoon. The best time of day to go is between 1:00pm and 6:00pm when the sun is the warmest. If you want to float the whole length of River Channel, you could leave a vehicle at the end of the channel at Skaha Lake, but parking is quite limited. Don’t feel like investing three or four hours to float? Get out at the midway point, where you can grab a bite at HounDogs Reztaurant and even get a bus back to the launch site!

You’re in Wine Country, why not take part in BC’s largest wine tasting and farmer’s market? Cropped, by Valley First, is an annual event in Penticton. In 2017, it will be held on October 6th and 7th at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. Featuring over 80 wineries and a fall farmer’s market, Cropped is a sensory and visual experience. Okanagan wineries and farmers come together to create a truly unique experience. Click here for more details.

Save some time and order some dinner from Skaha Pizza! Their artisan, thin crust creations are absolutely delicious and use fresh ingredients!

Home of champagne powder, the Okanagan Valley is the best place to partake in winter activities! Why not head to Apex Ski Resort just outside of Penticton? Not a skier? No problem! They have something for everyone. How about going for a skate on the 1km long, Zamboni maintained adventure ice loop! Skate through the trees and enjoy the beauty that Apex has to offer! Check out their website for more details!

If you’d rather stay indoors and avoid the snow, visit Penticton Virtual Reality Studio and pretend you’re in another world! Fend off the bad guys, explore space, or travel to a different world in a fully immersive virtual reality experience!

Your Back to Work Survival Guide

Posted by Press No Comment yet

If there’s something we can all agree on, it’s that heading back to work after a jam-packed long weekend is rough. To help you prepare for the Monday-est Tuesday ever, we’ve created a small (but mighty) checklist to set you up for success.

Make your lunch the night before

Chances are you indulged in a few too many burgers and beverages. We’re not judging, we did too. Do yourself and your wallet a favour and make a lunch. A healthy and filling meal will keep you fuelled all day while you tackle that shockingly-full inbox.

Set your alarm 15 minutes before you want to get up

If you know you’re inevitably going to push snooze, set your alarm 15 minutes earlier! You’ll still get the satisfaction of pushing snooze, but you’ll stay on time!

No screen time 30 mins before bed

Set your alarm and then put your phone away. Staring at a cellphone or laptop screen before bed has been proven to make it harder to fall asleep, and will make you more groggy the next morning. Pick up a good book and read for 30 minutes before bed to quiet your mind and get you ready to have a good night’s rest.

Pour a big coffee

It’s Tuesday. The long weekend is over and it’s time to get down to business. Turn on your favourite music, pour yourself a large cup of coffee for the road and head out the door!

Make a to do list

You made it to work, your inbox is full, and 4 pressing items came out of your first meeting. Stop. Take a minute. Write it all down. Make a to-do list of realistic action items that you want to accomplish for the day. Being able to check them off as you complete them will give you a sense of accomplishment, and will also make your list look less daunting.

There you have it! Before you know it, it’ll be Wednesday, and then the weekend will be just around the corner again.

Download the GetintheLoop app and experience something new today!

Take it easy on Monday and play a round of golf at Okanagan Golf Club. Browse our Golf Loop for exclusive offers at your favourite golf course.

Southern Alberta

Turn off your phone, head to Round Table Board Gamerie, and enjoy some satisfying food and drinks while you play board games! It’s a great spot for Date Night or for a fun (and competitive) night with friends!

Stop in at Telegraph Tap House for Beerogies! Yes, you heard that right. Beer and perogies. We couldn’t come up with a better combination if we tried. Who ever thought of this truly deserves an award.

Take some time to just relax! Stop at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden on Monday and spend the afternoon enjoying some peace and quiet. On Monday you can also take part in the yukata dressing ceremony, take a tour of the garden, or have a 20 minute reflexology session!

Go on an adult field trip with Edmonton Brewery Tours! Visit local distilleries or breweries and learn how your favourite beverages are made and, of course, enjoy samples along the way!

Grab 14 of your closest friends and book an Urban Pedal Tour! Pedal through town and stop at 3 unique breweries to fuel your ride!

Spring has sprung! We heard that this is the year you’re going to finally get that garden going! Visit the Enjoy Centre in St. Albert to turn your thumb green.

Chances are that time will get away from you while you’re outside planting your new garden. Wrap up May Long with a stress-free and always satisfying dinner from Boston Pizza.

There you have it! Your long weekend is guaranteed to be jam packed with adventures and delicious food, what more could you ask for? Before you head out the door, make sure you download the GetintheLoop app to take advantage of exclusive offers and experiences (including some in this post!)
